Seminar and exhibition "Beyond Memorialisation"

The public seminar "Beyond Memorialisation. Design for Conflict Heritage" on April 30, 2014 addresses new forms of monuments in Berlin, Norway and Italy. With this English-language workshop, the exhibition at Felleshus (Nordic Embassies) will be inaugurated.

News from Apr 14, 2014

All over Europe, memorials for wars and mass crimes have been erected – not only after World War II, but also in recent years. Towards the 21st century, many memorials have changed in form and in function: from bronze or marble statues tointeractive or multimedia interventions, from perpetuating a heroic memory to promoting reflection, discussion and reconciliation.

These transformations have been studied by the European Research Project “REcall: European Conflict Archaeological Landscape Reappropriation”. The REcall project founded by EC Culture 2007-13 Programme – investigated possible roles that future monuments can play when dealing with difficult and painful heritages. Ten international and interdisciplinary working teams developed design proposals for assigned sites in countries occupied by Nazi Germany: the former concentration and execution camp Falstad, Norway, and five urban Resistance sites in Rome, Italy.

Research results and design proposals will be presented in Berlin, being not only the former capital of Nazi Germany, but also a city of multiple memorialisations and a vibrant debate about different kinds of memorials. The REcall consortium – in collaboration with The Norwegian Embassy and Freie Universität Berlin, Center for Digital Systems – will exhibit the design proposals and host an international seminar. Experts in the fields of archaeology, art, architecture, anthropology, history and the digital world will present their responses to the concept of “Beyond Memorialisation”, linking experiences and debates in Berlin to European developments.
