New Article about the Archive in the EHRI-Newsletter
In the second issue of the newsletter, Jan Rietema examines the creation of the interview collection as well as the further development of the archive.
News from May 22, 2013
The newsletter for experts in Holocaust documentation is being facilitated and developed as part of the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI). The aim of the newsletter is to share and disseminate knowledge and new insights, and to organize a continuous exchange of knowledge and views between experts in methodological fields of Holocaust research. It represents an additional complementary networking channel to the Expert Workshop, "Truth and Witness: An International Workshop on Holocaust Testimonies" (2012).
Jan Rietema, software architect and longtime staff member of the Center for Digital Systems at Freie Universität Berlin, describes the origination process of the online-archive "Forced Labor 1939 - 1945" in the new EHRI-Newsletter. How and where were the interviews conducted? How did the digitization, transcription, documentation, Indexing, and translation go? Which technical details stand behind the archive? Which accompanying materials, background information, educational offers and research tools exist?
By answering these and other questions, his english-language article "Remembering Forced Labour. A Digital Interview Archiv" offers a comprehensive overview of the genesis and the current form of the archive.
A special feature of the online archive - the mapping function that has been available since October 2012 - is the focus of Dr. Cord Pagenstecher's presentation within the scope of the international EHRI workshop "Geography and Holocaust Research" from May 27 to May 29, 2013.
