Linking Database and Online Archive – New Research Tools for Nazi Forced Labor

The information portal of the Federal Archives "Forced Labor in the National Socialist State" and the online archive "Forced Labor 1939-1945" have been linked to provide metasearch access.

Researchers, teachers, students and others also interested in the topic can now access the holdings of both archives using a new metasearch feature:

The new metasearch feature allows not only for a for a focused search according to specific places and the holdings available there but also for simultaneous access to the life story interviews according to the forced laborer´s place of deployment or imprisonment.

Networking the online platforms will also promote educational and research projects on local history aiming to combine the vividness of oral and video interviews with the wide range of files and records in historical archives.

Also funded by the Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future", the information portal of the Federal Archives "Forced Labor in the National Socialist State" comprises with its core modules documents of relevant European archive holdings from 13 countries as well as basic information on 3800 places of detention similar to concentration camps. Both institutions have expressed their intent to more closely network their materials and archives on forced labor in order to make possible more opportunities for net-based research, while safeguarding the respective terms and conditions of use. The portals offer comprehensive search features and encourage an active engagement with the subject of forced labor through innovative educational work.
