Geoffrey Hartman, born on August 11, 1929 in Frankfurt, was Sterling Professor Emeritus and Senior Research Scholar of English and Comparative Literature at Yale University.
In 1979, he founded with Dori Laub and others the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies in New Haven, USA. In the following years, he headed that collection which currently includes more than 4000 video interviews with Holocaust survivors.
The Online Archive "Forced Labor 1939-1945" is associated with the Fortunoff Archive through Dori Laub's interviews in the subcollection "USA - Yale New Haven".
With his numerous publications, Geoffrey Hartman has changed Oral History and Holocaust research in a fundamental way. But for him, there would not or not in this form exist any interview archives about national socialism.
